At the end of a silence that seemed to last an eternity, she broke into a smile that was devoid of all emotion, neither kind nor unkind. A smile that had but the shape of a smile.

She ended up finding a spiral staircase. Barely had she set foot on the first step than she was already at the top. She didn’t question this phenomenon—she was becoming accustomed to such spatial anomalies.
