I quite enjoy the idea of central problems but only in retrospect. Curating one's life direct sounds like an impossibly error prone task. I heard somewhere that you should 'treat your life like calligraphy'
There is definitely something to be said about the power of story, of narrative. That's why conspiracies are so easy to believe, the need for someone in control.
