Roger Caillois, a french psychological anthropologist, studied this for his whole career and was able to break fun down into 4 types of play
Competition (games of agon)
"Allows you to stretch [your] skills to meet the challenge provided by the skills of the opponent"
Chance (games of alea)
Things like gambling, dice, bingo, etc are fun because they give you the illusion of controlling the future
Chaos (games of ilinx)
Anything that can scramble your sense of ordinary perception, which includes things like getting dizzy, skydiving, imbibing substances...
These allow you to temporally get out of your own head
Escapism (games of mimicry)
Anything that creates alternate realities ie dance, theater, or the arts in general
