He was talking to me, just like everyone else, and I arranged my face into a shape that would seem pleasant and interested.

It had been wrong to say the things I said, I knew that, but it had felt good in the way that vomiting felt good sometimes.

It didn’t occur to me to watch for cowardice the same way I watched for anger.

I missed that handshake. I missed the grown-up feeling of having successfully completed a maneuver that existed solely to prove that both parties knew what they were doing. I missed knowing without a doubt that I had done the thing right.

I knew that there was a part of me that would never be not-alone again.

If you are loved, then you cannot be replaced.
