"What happiness am I putting off that I could have right now?"

Roam Research Starting Mindset

Starting mindset, love that turn of phrase. Off the top of my head here's a few

Start small and with a goal.

Don't try and learn everything first, try and do 1 or 2 things.

There are really only 3-4 core feature you need to understand to get 80% of the power. Roam is a big bowl of spaghetti so start with a small bowl

Just start writing and whenever you write something (a concept, proper noun, etc) you think you'll reference later or somewhere else create

Don't be stingy about creating pages, they can't hurt only connect

understand the power of indenting

Don't be so concerned about "structure", as long as you create pages as you go along roam will pretty much sort things out itself. Once you start to get a handle on how

It's tempting at first to use roam like a filling cabinet or dashboard but ultimately that will end up constraining you. Trust in the graph and its organic nature

Making a few choices about style or conventions can help but only guidelines

I'd suggest doing most of your writing on the Daily Notes Page ( DNP ), this may seem oddly like a diary at first but in actuality it will act like a timestamp for your thoughts letting you see the evolution of an ideas and adjacent ideas you may have missed

Once you build up a critical mass set some time aside ( ~10min) for "Roaming" through your graph diving into

Roam Allow you to quickly follow tangents and then get back to what you were doing

I was forced to use notion the other day and I've never felt so isolated while writing, it was nuts. I hadn't realized just how much my process has changed in the last 9 months...

Don't try and do everything, try and do 1 or 2 things. Grow that when you feel constrained

Roam isn't for everyone and everything (even if I wish it was lol) and that's OK. Don't feel the need to cram something into Roam if the friction is too high

Thinking about useful visualizations for a graph database

hovering over a node dims unconnected nodes

color the area around certain nodes

graph filters - include and exclude

page level second order connections
